Document Summary

Lecture 19 - eukarya - land plants, vascular. Vascular plant synapomorphies: organs (roots, stems, leaves, dermal, ground, and vascular tissue systems, vascular tissue system (xylem tissue and phloem tissue, dominant sporophyte generation lignin comprises the secondary cell walls of certain cells. These resources, plus key nutrients, enter vascular plants via the shoot and root systems! Materials are transported internally by the vascular tissue system! There are two types of vascular tissue forming a continuous pathway in roots and shoots: xylem - carries water and dissolved nutrients from the roots up the plant, phloem - carries sugars from the leaves down (and up) Tracheids - elongated cells, dead at maturity (only cell wall remains). Pits in the cell walls pass water with nutrients between the cells. Vessel elements - elongated cells, dead at maturity (only cell wall remains). Perforations at both ends pass water with nutrients. They stack end to end so that they form a hollow tube.
