Document Summary

Qualities: features that characterize stimuli within a particular modality. Interoceptive receptors-respond to signals from within the body and communicate this info. to the brain by pathways that typically are not brought into consciousness. Proprioceptors-monitor the positions of muscles and joints, and other interoceptive receptors monitor the chemical and thermal state of the body and its orientation. Some sensory receptor cells are neurons or epithelial cells: and each receptor is highly selective for a specific kind of energy and sensitive to their selected modality and amplify the sesory signal. Primary afferent neuron-neuron whose axon carries the signal to the central nervous system. Transduction-process by which receptor cells change stimulus into energy of a nerve impulse. Receptor potential-small stretch applied to the relaxed muscle leads to small depolarization. Phasic receptor-produces ap"s during only part of the stimulation typically only at the onset or at the offset of the stimulus and cannot by itself convey info about the duration of the stimulus.
