CSD 412 Lecture 12: Cultural Considerations for Dysphagia Compliation
Document Summary
Though quality of life for dysphagia patients varies depending on the patient"s level of severity, it is something that we must consider when selecting treatment/care options. One vital cultural aspect we should consider is that the patient may not be able to eat his/her favorite traditional cultural dishes. The individual might, in fact, not be able to eat anything from his/her country and background. A second consideration is that the patient also may experience extreme disgust to the dysphagia diet; often the food that is given to dysphagia patients is tasteless and bland. If we feed this bland food to patients who are used to specific textures and spiciness, they may be very upset about the food change. He/she may also feel a lack of control, so giving the patient the most control and choice over his/her food (when possible) is necessary when considering treatment options.
