Almost another great depression, but only a recession due to quick government action. *we should not be optimistic, we are facing larger problems than in previous centuries. Due in part to population growth (mostly outside the us and europe) Pop growth due in part to lower child mortality and higher life expectancy. So: lower child mortality + higher life expectancy = pop growth = environmental problems. Average person consuming more food and resources than before, esp. in china and other places which have rapidly industrialized in the past few decades. Feeding more people --> deforestation, desertification, lower fish pop, less fresh water supply. Decline of freshwater: ogallala aquifer- one of the largest stores of underground water in world is rapidly losing water. Industrial revolution and use of fossil fuels. Amount of co2 has raised since industrial revolution. Most have rapidly industrialized in the past 30 years. Most energy comes from burning coal which is the worst for the environment.
