Here, women were free to browse and shop, safely away from home and form the company of men. Idea was to shift emphasis to increasing consumption: by 1850 consumers had access to goods from around the world. Global consequences: decline of economies of india, china, ottoman empire, although industrial products of west inferior to artisan produced goods, asian and other markets forced to open doors to western traders and merchants.
