Document Summary

Philosophy september 2016 - problem of free will. Midterm paper due on monday october 17th. Libertarianism is based on dualism, but natural science has shown dualism to be false. The human being is a purely physical being held under the sway of causal laws, natural forces and happens. If we were dualism we would have a metaphysical take. Libertarianism: human beings have free will; at least some human actions are undetermined by antecedent causes. Sometimes we act freely, but not always. (some argue that we always act freely we are radically free). Defined as the idea at least sometimes we act voluntarily. Compatiblism: everything is determined, but human beings can still be free insofar as we act voluntarily (soft determinism). The choices we make are known ahead of time, so they are not always true choices, spontaneous moments happen on purpose and were known in advance.
