Document Summary

Canvas quiz free will due by 1pm on wednesday sept 28. Midterm paper due on monday october 17th. Libertarianism is based on dualism, but natural science has shown dualism to be false. The human being is a purely physical being held under the sway of causal laws, natural forces and happens. If we were dualism we would have a metaphysical take. Libertarianism: human beings have free will; at least some human actions are undetermined by antecedent causes. Sometimes we act freely, but not always. (some argue that we always act freely we are radically free). Defined as the idea at least sometimes we act voluntarily. Compatiblism: everything is determined, but human beings can still be free insofar as we act voluntarily (soft determinism). All individuals are molded and created by their surroundings and influences in their life. Therefore by looking at their influences you are able to determine what they will be like or become.
