• Increase in Average Life Expectancy in the U.S.
o Life expectancy varies depending on where you live and what you have available to you
o Only in industrialized states is where you find highest life expectancy
o Average life expectancy in 1900 was 40, in the ’s it was , and today its (for the
US)
o In 1906 the FDA is created because of The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
▪ The number of deaths dropped by 10s of thousands per year
o In 1930, the CDC was created and Food preservatives, eradicated malaria and yellow
fever in the US
▪ Again, this had a large effect on deaths
o At the end of WWII, penicillin could be mass produced and synthesized and refrigeration
to elongate the lifetime of food
o In the 1950s, immunizations become available to fight disease
• The three changes that led to life expectancy being extended is food safety, antibiotics, and
immunizations
• Leading causes of adult death in US
o Heart disease
o Cancers
o Diabetes
o Stroke
o All are a result of the interaction of Genetics and Lifestyle
o Most importantly diet, exercise, substance abuse
• 3 aspects of lifestyle that increase life expectancy and decrease debility
o Diet (The US aounts for % of the world’s population ut /3 of the worlds weight of
all humans)
▪ Veggies, fruits, grains
▪ Fish, lean meat
▪ Sugars & Starches
▪ Portion control
o Exercise
▪ WALK!
▪ Sustained, 20-30 minutes at a stretch
o Sleep 6+ hours
▪ Regular routine
▪ Substance abuse
▪ Lowered light level
▪ Regular exercise
