BIOL 2221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Citric Acid Cycle, Cell Theory, Prophase
Document Summary
Cell theory, basic structural and functional unit of life, activities inside the cells compromise the activities of the organism. Selective permeability - only allows certain things to enter: small, hydrophilic things can pass through, amphipathic nature, polar head - hydrophilic, nonpolar tail - hydrophobic. Cell signaling - hormones are communicating with the cells and trying to relay a message that is interpreting through molecules. This causes the cell to respond: fluid mosaic model- how the plasma membrane is explained. There is movement and flexibility within the plasma membrane: dynamic environment - constantly changing, components. Phospholipids - the majority of the plasma membrane. A lipid that has phosphate attached to it: glycolipids - a lipid that has sugar attached to it, allows for cell communication and cell adhesion of neighboring cells. Cholesterol - allows for a flexible and fluidity of membrane: stuck in between some of the phospholipids.
