Aristotle- Linear model of communication
1st a sender —————-2nd a receiver
(speaker) (message) (audience)
sender has all of the power in this model, there isn't a way for feedback
so then came the
Transactional model of communication
radio- if you dont like the information you can change the station, audience has power but sender
doesn't know they are changing the station.
the message in this model now goes through a channel (many different ways, tv, radio, voice,
book, social media, photos, even soccer jerseys)
ex: sold sign says
-house is no longer available
-I did my job
-$
-advertising
the channel becomes a way for feedback from the audience to the sender
feedback can be direct or indirect
ex: when telling a joke:
either someone doesn't laugh (direct)
may tell the joke to someone else (indirect)
in the message and channel there is noise that can create unclearness
-body language
-static
-distractions (interruptions, thoughts, phone calls, temperature, feelings, language barrier, tech
difficulties)
there can be external noise or internal noise
NOISE MAKES COMMUNICATION DIFFICULT BECAUSE BOTH PEOPLE HAVE NOISE
AND THE CHANNEL
how does the sender create a message that the audience understands with minimum noise?
*interperative term
All of the communication happens in a certain environment or context
ex: body painted in class (not good/appropriate)
but at a football game (good/ appropriate)
Rhetorical Sensitivity: Hart & Burks (1972)
1. We as individuals play multiple roles (daughter, student, sister, girlfriend, friend, consumer)

Distractions (interruptions, thoughts, phone calls, temperature, feelings, language barrier, tech difficulties) there can be external noise or internal noise. Noise makes communication difficult because both people have noise. All of the communication happens in a certain environment or context ex: body painted in class (not good/appropriate) but at a football game (good/ appropriate) Rhetorical sensitivity: hart & burks (1972: we as individuals play multiple roles (daughter, student, sister, girlfriend, friend, consumer) Some of these roles we can choose, some you cannot choose. All the power lies within the (others) you cant be a middle schooler anymore. Most of conflict occurs when we act outside of those percieved roles created by others. Conflict with boyfriend reacting like a parent (not perceived well: we must be flexible within these roles, avoid stylized behavior.
