These basic elements help us understand how visuals push our buttons . Dot: first element in analyzing visual communications. Line: a dot that went on a walk. Combined can form lines and these lines can create shapes. A succession of dots in which the dots are not distinguishable forms a line. We use lines to indicate what things look like what their shape is. When we look at lines in drawings or paintings, we find artists have distinctive lines . Lines can be: smooth, delicate, heavy, rough. Lines can have their own qualities and generate varying responses. These shapes are the fundamental building blocks in all visual communication. Each shape has its own characteristic some have meaning through association .
