Appointed counsel: private attorneys assigned to indigent defendants that are paid an hourly rate and they cannot refuse to take a case (but they can be excused). Advocate: the defense should act as an advocate, represent their will, and act as a legal aid to the defendant. Presumption of innocence: foundational to us cj system.
