The spanish came to america for god and glory ; expansion, conversion, and wealth. In florida/georgia, once the spanish discovered that there was not much gold/silver in the region, they focused on permanent settlements. Three phases of settlement: exploration 1513-1565. 1565 st. augustine founded: initial colonization & fortification 1565-1587, the missionary era 1587-1700. Group of 600 men with the intent to settle the land. Settlement lasted 6 weeks allyon died; with no real leader to keep thinkgs going the settlement failed and there was the first major slave uprising. Group of 600 men (mostly soldiers) and 500 head of livestock (cattle and pigs: 1513-1564 there were many spanish attempts to settle; none were successful until st. augustine in 1565, there were 2 types of settlements. Presidios militaristic forts (most would become missions eventually) Missions religious settlement (franciscan friars: the missions most affected the guale and the macoma, missions were only established with the cooperation" of the natives.
