Document Summary

Language is learned through imitation, practice, feedback on success and habit formation. Imitation when the child repeats the word-for-word repetition. Feedback on success can be done by positive reinforcement. Chomsky claims that children are born with abstract, structural knowledge which allows them to discover the rules of a particular language. It is also believed that children are born with the ability to make rules about language. Developmentalist believe that language is learned from experience. The words and language children need to know is available to them based off the language they are exposed to. The evidence against the behaviorist approach is that mistake are seen as a fault in the adults speech. The language is a mechanical activity, and that adults lower their language level to the (cid:272)hild"s (cid:449)he(cid:374) (cid:272)o(cid:373)(cid:373)u(cid:374)i(cid:272)ati(cid:374)g with them. Evidence against the theory is that it does not contain examples of all the linguistic rules and patterns.
