Software is the other half of the computer platform; software makes the hardware useful. Software is divided into two distinct categories: operating system (os) software and application software. An os allows us to put the hardware components to use with device drivers and provides us special utilities to keep our machines running efficiently. The operating system is the overseer of all that goes on in the computer- it"s the liaison between you and your digital device! Application software is also referred to as productivity software; it assists users in completing tasks; it allows users to be productive. Computers are made of: hardware (electronic parts) and software (a set of instructions) The four basic functions of computers are: input, processing, output, storage. The computer processes it and delivers output: processing is mostly via the cpu, the cpu stores data in ram. Ram is volatile- ram is considered short-term memory; once the computer is shut down anything stored in ram is lost.
