Monopoly on the use of violence: max weber. The communist revolutionary leon trotsky expressed what many already believed when he said that every state is founded on force. Intrastate conflicts: the violent and non-violent uprisings that take place between groups within countries. Success rate of nonviolence: is significantly greater than that of violence. This empirical finding has been repeatedly confirmed over the last few decades as researchers analyzed diverse historical records to determine how often and in what circumstances nonviolent movements succeed. Violent 26% -- decrease probability of future success. Gene sharp: gandhi developed this perspective further in his path-breaking the politics of nonviolent action published in 3 volumes in 1973. Sharps advanced theory consent theory of power built on the premise that state power ultimately depends not on violence but on the collaboration of ordinary citizens. Nonviolent methods: enable people to oppose government actions and policies through protests, resistance and interference.
