PAX 1102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Conflict Resolution, Peacebuilding, Alternative Dispute Resolution
Document Summary
Managed properly it can be a motor for change and a way to manage difference. Problems arise when conflict is managed poorly which can lead to violence. This diagram shows what happens when conflict is not well-managed and escalates to the point of harm. At the left end of the curve, conflict starts in a latent stage which means nobody is really aware of what is brewing beneath the surface. Later the conflict will emerge and become apparent. If not managed, the conflict can escalate into a stage of harm at its peak. Some conflicts linger at the peak for far too long going unaddressed. In order to reduce the intensity and move down the right side of the curve, conflict resolution methods need to be applied such as negotiation and dispute settlement. As the conflict intensity returns to the lowest level, post-conflict peacebuilding becomes appropriate to ensure no latent conflict lingers ready to emerge again later.
