Greater effort is expended because you want to win. A driving force; lets you know who"s doing well and not doing well. Individuals are more guarded because they don"t want to see other people succeed: mixed motive. A tendency to want to compete but cooperate at the same time: social value orientation. Tend to think about other people"s interests. Cooperators tend to be prosocial and pro-self. Competitors tend to be pro self (low in prosocial, to the point of sabotage) Altruists tend to be prosocial (low in pro-self) Individualists tend to be pro-self, (low in prosocial, don"t care about the other people either way: friend or foe. Out of 100 games, it was a 50/50 split on how the individual was going to play the game. Good predictor was age (young vs. old) A resource that must be maintained or improved.
