Document Summary

Transcription is the process whereby an rna copy (mrna) is made of the dna coding sequence of a gene: You may remember that we said last time (slide #11), that, in the early 1960"s, the french molecular biologists jacob and monod performed a set of experiments ( pajamo ) that lead to the discovery of mrna. They were studying the control mechanisms that govern the expression of an enzyme called -galactosidase in the bacterium e. coli. Jacob and monod found that, after all the glucose had been used up, the presence of lactose causes the expression of the genes lacz ( -galactosidase) and lac y (galactosidase permease). The tandem pair of lacz and lac y genes, coordinately expressed, was called the lac operon (the operon includes another gene, laca, not shown). They also discovered another gene, which regulated the expression of lacz and lac y.
