FDM 10033 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Perforation, Nonwoven Fabric, Polyurethane
Document Summary
Bound by mechanical fiber enlargement , resin, thermal fusion. Sew or fuse to garments fiber content affects inherent characteristics: strength, durability filament, staple, cellulosic absorbency, thermoplastic spun bonded. Pro: eliminate stretching: less skilled labor needed in production. Con: differential shrinkage: separation, bleed through of adhesive to face fabric, changes in hand/ drape. Needle punch- barbed needles pull fibers through each other to create a web: interlocking fibers. Used for shoulder pads and quilt backing. Mat or web of wool made from interlocking scales. No grain, raveling, stiff less pliable, weaker than other structures. Not widely used for fitted apparel due to lack of flexibility and elasticity. Polymer solution: melt extrusion or cast on hot drum. Supported film- attached to other fabric or substrate. Durable, expensive, easy to sew, less likely to crack or split. Vinyl- washable, not dry clean friendly, keep at warm temperature to avoid cracks. Used for shaping and padding: shoulder pads, intimates.
