FDM 10033 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Warp And Weft, Wrinkle
Document Summary
Knitting- forming fabric by interloping one or more sets of yarn. Looped structure is porous: less cover than comparable woven. Can produce complete garments on flatbed knitting machines. Technical face- outer side of fabric: usually better finish, finer more expensive yarns, floats are shorter, finer, less likely to snag, more obvious design. Interloping with one yarn moving back and forth (horizontally) Four types of stitches: knit stitch- great crosswise, less lengthwise elongation. Smooth knit side often used as design side. Technical front (v) and back: tuck stitch- creates fancy knit, pattern in fabric. Pointelle (#124: float or miss stitch- fancy knit, color effects. Jacquard jersey with different colors uses floats and tucks. #119: purl or reverse stitch- looks like technical back of basic knit on both sides. High performance knits have support in one area and freedom of movement in other areas. Runs (ladder) possible if yarn is cut or broken.
