The summation symbol : many statistical procedures involve finding the sum of a set of scores/samples, the sign (sigma) stands for summation. It is followed by a symbol or equation that defines what is to be added up: summation is done after operations in parenthesis, exponents (squaring) and multiplication or subtraction.
