ELECTRN 8 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: The Memory Palace, Retrospective Memory, Fluid And Crystallized Intelligence
Document Summary
Melby-lervag wm training does not improve performance on measures of intelligence or other. Working memory = capacity-limited system responsible for storage and manipulation of information in the human mind. Theoretically, variations in fluid intelligence reflect to large degree variations in wm capacity. Wm limitations place constraints on diverse higher functions. Wm training increases capacity and produces transfer effects to diverse untrained tasks dependent on such a capacity. Adhd study in which children in the training group improved on far transfer measures (intelligence); however, such results can be limited by small sample size and the duration of the completed tasks. Programs appear to produce short-term effects, which cannot be generalized to tasks that have not been trained. Short term improvements on verbal wm tasks (near transfer), that are not sustained until follow-up measures. Short-term improvements on visuospatial task wm tasks (near-transfer) that may be maintained (modestly), however outcome tasks share features with task trained.
