JAPAN 2 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Default Mode Network, Prefrontal Cortex, Frontal Lobe
Document Summary
Tutorial 8: cognitive control and the frontal lobes. Functions of pfc (siddiqui: executive functions: ability to initiate and carry out goal-directed patterns of behavior, sustained attention, response inhibition, filtering of information, mental flexibility, memory: encoding (lh) and retrieval (rh) of episodic memory. Intelligence: complex constructs; verbal expression, abstraction, formulation of goals. Language: regulation of spontaneous speech, narrative and verbal fluency: visual search and gaze control: analysis of detail and integrative scanning. Linked with association and limbic cortices: subcortical linkages: amygdala, hypothalamus, midbrain, and pons. Dorsolateral pfc-> bg system also involved in more cognitive control. Ventrolateral pfc/ofc-> bg system also involved in more affective control. The thalamus has many different nuclei with different properties (visual, auditory) in all it"s functionality its objective it"s job is to relay information. "somatic/physical markers" than enable us to "learn by experience" -> vmpfc links current contingencies with pervious emotional experience of similar situations; facilitates logical reasoning. Focus on attention, cognitive control and working memory!
