Document Summary

Hydrophobic core prevents diffusion of small charged molecules through the membrane ion channels are proteins that control the flow of specific ions - very specific, can make difference between na and k. High fluidity is important because cells inside the tissue need to deform. Water is slightly charged so it can enter the cell a little bit; the flow of water is regulated by aquaporins. The bilipid membrane is a simple, yet highly versatile structure. It provides a flexible interface for a cell, which both protects it, keeps it organized, and allows precise control of what comes in and what goes out. Its thickness is only <1/1000th of the typical cell diameter (~10000 nm). The selectivity of the exchange is enabled by the proteins in the membrane. There are a very large number of different membrane proteins, ~1/3 of all protein types. These proteins are constructed in a way that keeps them anchored in a certain depth" in the membrane.
