Augustus was concerned that poor drunks & petty criminals were being treated unfairly. In 1841, he persuaded a court to let him watch over a drunkard for 3 weeks. He helped 2,000 people: of these, only 4 proved unworthy (where he lost bail). Why do we use community supervision: decongest prisons, keep prison off people"s records. Probation facts: probation is the most common community sentence.
