Qualities of surgeons: stoic, quick working, patients bled out quickly, no anesthesia. Training of surgeons / procedures: little formal training, did not study anatomy, amputations did not need to know much anatomy, aneurism, infection, gun shot, . Venereal disease: liberal views on sexuality, affected everyone, hunter gives himself venereal disease leads of syphilis? though he proved it but made mistake. Hunter as modern surgeon: conservative with surgery, don"t operate unless surgeon would choose it for himself given the circumstances, method of observation and improvement. War and surgery: regular practice for gunshot wound remove bullet, increase chance of infection. Dentistry: looked down upon by other physicians and surgeons. Enlightenment: chemistry and physics advancement, apply chemistry and physics to medicine but was unproductive, medical knowledge by experiment. Medicine is becoming a profession: hunter and his brother were teaching, shadowing other physicians and surgeons.
