2 or more people interact and exact mutual influence on one another: rarely are we a true individual interdependence for a common purpose. Mutual influence, task independence, and: collective identity- uniforms, goals, etc, distinctive roles- leaders, subordinates, sport positions structured modes of communication- signals, lingo, numbers, etc. group norms- group determined acceptable and non acceptable behavior. Linear group development: forming- when group first comes together, storming- butting heads, roles not formally established, norming- roles are clear and understood, performing- easy to perform when norming has finally happened. As groups develop, prepare for break up. Pendular group development: orientation, differentiation and conflict, resolution and cohesion, termination. Formal- dictated by the nature and structure of the organization: captains, coaches, refs, umpires, sports positions. Informal- evolve from interactions among group members: leaders that aren"t officially appointed, class clowns, etc. Role clarity: know what"s expected, duties of the role, problem: miscommunication and different interpretations.
