Anaerobic Stepping
Introduction
A step test is a power endurance test
Duration = 60 s at maximal effort
Power endurance
All-out events lasting from a minimum of 15 s to a maximum of
60s
Primarily dependent upon
Glycolytic pathway
Astrand & Rodahl suggest that
Max efforts involving large muscle groups of 1 min duration
require metabolic contributions of about
30-35% aerobic
65-70% anaerobic
Highest lactate leels occu in ell-tained athletes at the
end of competitive events of 1-2 min
Blood lactates of elite athletes = 17x (16.7 mmol/L) resting
values
Blood lactate are about 6x > resting values for Ana step test
Accuracy
Reliability
Test-retest reliability is high (r > 0.90)
Validity
Strong relationship (r = 0.87) b/t anaerobic step test score & LBM
Moderate relationship (r = 0.61) b/t Ana step test score &
dominant leg strength
Highly correlated (r = -0.824) w/time in 600 yd run
