We may consider: sculpture, drawing, painting, dance, theater, music, literature, film, photography, festivals. May take very different forms in other societies. Anthropological definition: something that has culturally significant meaning that is skillfully encoded in an affecting, sensuous meaning. Sensuous--- can be perceived by one or more of human senses. Artistic rules for evaluating the form of activities or objects produced. The media: the media in which culturally significant meaning can be encoded are vast, wood, bone, paper, stone, etc, aesthetics. Depict someone, but no one in particular. Luminosity--- achieved through polishing and carving of incision and shadows. Early functionalist approach- art serves cultural functions: enculturation of children. Propaganda posters/art: social control, an older perspective of art. Art and identity: example of unesco"s role, unesco declare certain practices as intangible cultural perspectives, not necessarily art. Largely intended for a western audience, their aesthetic demands dictate what the pieces should" look like.
