Document Summary

Chem 1201 - lecture 4 - ions and ionic compounds (continued) Polyatomic anions containing oxygen with more than two members in the series are named as follows (in order of decreasing oxygen): Polyatomic anions containing oxygen with additional hydrogens are named by adding: Dihydrogen (two h), etc. , to the name as follows: Hco3 - is the hydrogen carbonate (or bicarbonate) anion. H2po4 - is the dihydrogen phosphate anion. Composed of metal or polyatomic cations plus nonmetal or polyatomic anions. Ex4: nahco3 = sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) For transition metals which can have multiple oxidation numbers use roman numerals in parentheses. Composed of two kinds of non-metallic atoms. Prefix both atom names with greek number prefixes = molecular formula subscripts (mon (o), di, tri, tetra, penta, hexa, hepta, octa, nona, deca) Atoms leftmost in periodic table named first exception: nh3 ammonia exception. If both elements are in the same group, the lower one is written first.
