Document Summary

Descent with modification: a darwinian view of life. The first convincing case of evolution was published by charles darwin in 1859. --evolution: the transformation of the lifeforms on earth over time, species changing over generational time. Sometimes they occur quickly, but often, they occur over long periods: not a linear process; it"s a branching process. A process where splits/divergences occur: whatever gave rise to organism a, also gave rise to organism b. There were purple flowers and white flowers, now there are red flowers, and they become favored. For bacteria => a day or two could be plenty. For humans => about 10 years; may be 200-300 to thousands of years before changes occur. The most popular hypothesis for the origin of species was creationism. All species were created exactly as they exist today. May be strictly biblical or may involve continual creation. The evidence of some of the organisms that have existed on earth are preserved as fossils.
