Document Summary

There are nine (cid:498)levels(cid:499) of communication: intrapersonal- (cid:498)talking to yourself(cid:499, imagined interaction- when you fight with someone, and you(cid:495)re like (cid:494)oh i should(cid:495)ve said that(cid:495, interpersonal- talking to just one other person, dyads. Others disagree: small group- must have 3 or more members to qualify as small group, large group- typically 20 or more people, mediated- enough people so you need a microphone or television broadcast, one-to-many- mediated but much bigger. Thousands of people: many-to-one- society telling one person how to act, how to dress, etc. For any communication you need: 1) sender, 2) message, 3) receiver. Sender encodes the message so the receiver will be able to decode it, or understand the message. Noise- complication of communication, gets in the way of the message. Differences in potential for sharing ideas and information: When you add a member to a group, possible interactions increase exponentially. Diminishing returns- the more and more you consume of something, the less.
