Gender, skin color, ethnicity, age, physical characteristics, religion, etc. Cultural competence: the ability to understand and appreciate differences among people and adjust behavior in ways that enhance, rather than detract from, relationships and communication. Prejudice: a preconceived judgment or opinion formed without just grounds or sufficient knowledge: learned response, usually built on stereotypes. Stereotype: a standardized mental picture that represents an oversimplified opinion or uncritical judgment: reasons why we stereotype, desire for patterns and logic, media influences, laziness. Discrimination: denying equal access to employment, educational, and housing opportunities or treating people as second-class citizens. 4 basic ways to communicate: thinkers: focus on facts and logic, organizers: focus on structure and completeness, givers: focus on concern for others, adventurers: focus on the present time. Constructive criticism: criticism that promotes improvement or development.
