ENGL 2000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Revamp, Stamen
Document Summary
When thinking about the prison system, it is hard to pin point just which dysfunctional aspect frustrates me most. There are so many entities that are affected by it, and you wouldn"t have to dig very far to realize that in some way it touches the lives of everyone in the country. First of all, the amount of money that goes into the prison system is obscene. Public prisons are paid for by the government. The government is funded by citizen"s tax dollars. Essentially, we are paying for criminals to sit around in a cell for a while to only later get out, commit anther crime, and go right back to prison. This inevitable cycle brings me to my next point. There is not enough being done to ensure that prison recidivism is reduced. Most prisoners spend their time doing absolutely nothing during their sentence.
