The Fate of Rome by Jerome
p. 157: Letter from Jerome to a highborn lady in Gaul. This passage is speaking of the fate of
Rome. The Visigoths and Rome were still battling each other, and to stop the fighting, Rome
finally offered the Visigoths a ransom of land.
Whats going on at this time? The Visigoths were being pushed by the Huns into Roman
territory with the fear of being conquered by the Huns. Visigoths asked permission from
Romans to cross the Danube and set up camps. Romans agreed and allowed Visigoths to set
up camps. Too many Visigoths came, and Romans freaked out. Soon, the two groups started
battling each other. The Visigoths didnt want control of cities, they just wanted more land
because they were an agriculture people.
Possible Selection: O wretched Empire! Mayence {Mainz}, formerly so noble a city, has
been taken and ruined, and in the church many thousands of men have been massacred.
Worms has been destroyed after a long siege. Rheims, that powerful city, Amiens, Arras,
Speyer, Strasburg,--all have seen their citizens led away captive into Germany.
The Building of Saint Sophia by Procopius
p. 193: This is all about the construction of the Hagia Sophia (Saint Sophia). Anything that is
about construction of the church (domes, circles, etc.) is this passage.
Whats going on at this time? Justinian was the Byzantine Emperor at the time. He and
thousands of other Byzantines had made it to the Hippodrome for the races. There was a
dispute over who the winner of the races would be, and riots followed. Rioters burned
down the Hagia Sophia, a church that had been a symbol of the Empire. To settle the
rioters down, Justinian ordered that he would pay for the rerunning of the races with his
own money. All of the rioters came back, and Justinian then ordered for all 30,000 of the
rioters to be killed inside the Hippodrome. As a sign of penance for ordering this massacre,
Justinian had the Hagia Sophia rebuilt to be more magnificent and more marvelous than it
had been before. It is still truly a wonder of the world.
The Koran by Muhammad
p. 195: This is the Muslim Holy Book. Anything about rules, morality, religion, heaven, hell
etc. is this passage.
Whats going on at this time? Islam is beginning and spreading. Mohammad lived in a
polytheistic world. He had a vision that God (Allah) sent the angel Gabriel to speak to
Mohammad. He told Mohammad that there was only one God (Allah) and that he,
Mohammad, would be his prophet. Mohammad began spreading this new religion, and
followers came. The Koran is developed, the Holy Book of Islam. It is a book of rules and the
followings of Allah.
