In addition to the 10 multiple choice questions, requiring about five minutes
to complete, you will be responsible for answering two of the four questions
below. Try not to spend more than 30 minutes on each short essay.
Answers should be written in a legible hand on the exam sheet, in the
space provided. Use the reverse of the page if you need it. Avoid
overgeneralization––that’s why you’re getting the questions in advance.
Direct, factual exposition is all that’s needed. No bluebook is required
(Each short essay counts 40 points; multiple choice questions are 2 points
each, or 20 points total.)
1. What were the several factors (or catalysts) that combined to make
Revolutionaries of so many British-Americans, a mere twelve years after
the French and Indian War––when they had felt a great surge in pride as
British subjects?
-Britain sent nearly 50,000 “criminals” to the America’s who broke tax laws
-America had pride in their country and hoped to protect it from danger and they
won the battle but that left them in debt, they deployed troops to North America
-Revenue Act: passed by parliament which instructed the Royal Navy to seize
American vessels carrying food crops from mainland to French West
-Sugar Act of 1773: the purpose of protecting its sugar planation’s in the West Indies
-Stamp Act: gained money from the Americas by imposing a stamp duty on printed
things like the newspapers and official documents
-Tea Act: final straw in the series of unpopular policies and taxes imposed by Britain,
Boston Tea Party
-America was self-sufficient and wanted to be independent, they felt that they could
be on their own and be better that way
2. According to Charles Eastman/Ohiyesa, what, in spiritual terms, does it
mean to be an Indian? Beyond what is spelled out in Soul of the Indian,
what events covered in class and in the main text (America: A Concise
History) exemplify the mutual misperceptions expressed by North
American Indians and Euro-American settlers?
-Indians are not materialistic
-They believed in the Unseen/Great Mystery, silent worship; respected the soul of
the animals
-they believed in equality; shared everything
