Document Summary

Initially, war was about reuniting the south with the north. For the south, it was about maintaining their way of life. South has upper hand at the beginning of the war. The north uses emancipation as a tool to weaken the confederacy. By appealing to britain"s large anti-slavery stance, the north gained british support by fighting for emancipation. 200,000 (10%) blacks join union army. (now have something to fight for) Yet most northern states still don"t allow blacks the right to vote. Emancipation proclamation does not give blacks the right to vote, but it does not allow blacks to be counted in population of a state if they don"t have the right to vote. Neither party is completely for equal rights. Northerners fear blacks taking jobs and causing a fall in wages. Failure of reconstruction: lack of support for equal rights. Samuel b. tilden (demo) vs. rutherford b. hayes (republican: no clear winner tilden wins popular vote.
