Dominant and subaltern: used to describe powerful groups against weak, once a group is in power it defines people who are against the people in power. Static societies cyclical time: europeans seemed to had linear time, things are constantly changing. The east: seen as despotic, and filled with violence (mongols, associated with many ideas dreamed up in the west about the east an area of mystique and enchantment. Recent west and east: allied powers and communist block. Three worlds: depicted during the cold war, west, east, and the rest. Romantics in general were seeking out the thrilling aspects of life. (some would watch mass graves to watch ppl being thrown in- experience mortality directly) (opium was very popular) (satanism) all about doing the opposite! The spirit of the enlightenment was all about the rationalization of everything. Ideas of alternative modernities : embrace modernity by not losing your traditional culture.
