Hms challenger-1872-1876 first large scale expedition of studying oceans (temp, species, dredges, soundings) Fridtjof nansen- norwegian who wanted to explore the north pole. Echo sounding or fathometer- made a sound that recorded the time it took the could calculate distance, may provide inaccurate view of sea floor. German meteor expedition- first systematic nonbiological oceanographic expedition. Sonar- gloria (navy) marc (sea mapping and remote characterization) Hypsographic scale- shows relationship between height of land and depth of ocean. Continental margins- passive (not close to any plate boundary) active- associated with convergent or transform plate boundary. Trenches on convergent ocean plates create island arcs parallel to the trench ( different than hot spot created islands)
