o The physiological and psychological response to conditions that threaten or
challenge
o Physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses
Stressors
o Events that cause a stress reaction
Acute or Chronic
o How you interpret the stressor will determine your stress response.

Unpleasant and undesirable stressors
o Eustress
Positive events, or the optimal amount of stress that people need to
promote health and well-being
Causes of Stress
o Catastrophe
an unpredictable, large-scale event

overwhelming feelings of threat
Ex: the flood forced people to relocate and adjust
o Major Life Changes
Cause stress by requiring adjustment
How can we measure it?
Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS)
Measures the amount of stress over one year
