PSYC 2040 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Autobiographical Memory, Ego Depletion, Ingratiation
Document Summary
When we do this too much, we create the slime effect: self-deprecating - implying you are not as good as someone else in order to communicate admiration. Introspection - is the private contemplation of who we are in an effort to gain self knowledge: we are not good at this. We do not know why we do the things we do. Salience - what is the accessible and the focus of our attention: ex: when talking to your parents, your salience is that you are the child and they are the parents. Being in a class of all males, a female"s salience would be gender. Personal-social continuum - signifies the two distinct ways that the self can be categorized. Personal level - self can be thought of as a unique individual (intragroup comparisons). Social identity level - self can be thought of as a member of a group (intergroup comparisons).
