PSYC 2076 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Primitive Reflexes, 18 Months, Object Permanence
Document Summary
Jean piaget had a profound impact on both psychology and education. Alfred binet, piaget developed an interest in the intellectual development of children. Based upon his observations of his own and other children, he concluded that children were not less intelligent than adults, they simply think differently. Piaget would ask children questions, and listen to their answers. He wasn"t really interested in what their answers were, or if the answers were wrong or right. He was more interested in the thought process behind their answers. Piaget"s stage theory describes the cognitive development of children. Cognitive development involves changes in cognitive process and abilities. In piaget"s view, early cognitive development involves processes based upon physical actions and later progresses into changes in mental operations. It is important to note that piaget did not view children"s intellectual development at a quantitative process; that is, kids do not just add more information and knowledge to their existing knowledge as they get older.
