Marriage- group"s approved mating arrangements, usually marked by a ritual of some sort. Family- two or more people who consider themselves related by blood, marriage, or adoption. House hold- people who occupy same housing unit: we cant say that marriage always includes a sexual relationship. Polygamy- form of marriage in which men have more than one wife. Polyandry- form of marriage in which women have more that one husband. Nuclear family is a family consisting of husband, wife, children; traditional family. Extended family would be family of relatives (grandparents, aunts, etc) Family formed when a couple"s first child is born. These definitions are broad because there are so many variations in our society where there is same sex marriage, marrying dead people, different ceremonies. 4 main commonalities: mate selection- occurs and is based on group norms. Exogamy- must marry outside own group (avoiding incest) Think about kings and queens of england, they involve marrying within their kingdom.
