The intention part is very important in distinguishing suicides and accidents. Sadly, people do kill themselves accidently all the time these are not suicides. Positivist approach i. e. , looking at deaths that have been classified as suicides on death certificates. Methodological issues in looking at rates (estimates: they are not perfect measures because we won"t be able to capture every suicides. We rely on medical examiners and coroners to make these determinations. This can be very difficult for some cases. Undercounting and over counting: some suicides will be misclassified as accidents or possibly recorded as unknown, we could have accidents and homicides classified as suicides. Suicide in the us: each year around 30,000-35,000 deaths are classified as suicide, this is about twice the number of homicides that occur in the us, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the us. Made explicit threats but done nothing to self-harm yet.
