Phenomenology (ethnography- studying group in natural environment: jack katz- sneaky thrill - he interviewed burglars and found that they like the thrill of burglarizing more than what they are actually stealing. He talked to murderers who when they were explaining their crime, had a very different way of explaining what happened. They blamed the victims for what happened had a very moralized point of view (someone was right and someone was wrong) Labeling theory- tannenbaum: tags - labels, social reaction theory and how it can lead to more crime and deviance, first person to write about the labelling theory. When people violate norms, society places tags on them and then society begins to view these people according to their tags: lemert: Primary deviance: all the deviance you engage in before you get caught and labelled. Secondary deviance: they are caught and labeled but continue the deviance.
