Britain"s most colonies by 1800 didn"t see a need to colonize more lack of push to expand. France, spain, portugal barely holding on to the colonies they have. Colonies revolt haiti, south america, united states. Disjointed nations germany, italy are nation-states, principalities need to unite as one country before they can expand (starts in 1820s) By 1820s germany is a unified power, strong, industrialized. Italy nation building city-states come together as unified italy solid borders, common language, common history pride in nation, patriotism imperialism. Great britain power but island nation cannot produce everything they need within their own borders.
