Document Summary

Atomic structure id the foundation of life. Atoms are the smallest units of element. Atoms react with other atoms to form compounds and molecules. A cloud of negatively charged electrons that orbit around the atom"s nucleus. The negatively charged electrons are attracted to the positively charged protons in the nucleus. The electromagnetic attraction between protons and electrons keeps the electrons within the atoms (they tend not to leave). The number of electrons always equals the number of protons. Clouds of electrons that surround an atom"s nucleus. The outermost orbital is the valence shell. The electrons in the valence shell the valence electrons. Different orbitals have different levels of energy due to the electrons they contain. Atomic number- the number of protons in the nucleus. All atoms of an element have the same atomic number. Atomic mass- the weight of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Same as number of protons and neutrons.
