Document Summary
Basic research: research that answers fundamental questions about behavior, expands the knowledge on an area of research interest but does not seek to promote change in behavior or mental state. Applied research: research that investigates issues that have implications for everyday life and provides solutions to everyday problems, applies research findings toward well- being (example: change in behavior or mental state) Theory: an intergraded set of principals that explains and predicts many, but not all, observed relationships within a given domain of inquiry, good theories have 4 important characteristics: Parsimonious, meaning it provides the simplest possible account of those outcomes. Children pass through a series of cognitive stages as they grow, each of which must be mastered in succession before movement to the next cognitive stage. Research hypothesis: a precise statement of the presumed relationship among specific parts of a theory/ specific and falsifiable prediction about the relationship between or among two or more variables.
