Find the theme between the two pieces. It will be a piece we haven"t talked about, and you"ll need to use your knowledge of other pieces to describe and talk about the unknown piece. The early empire (27 bce - 96 ce) Octavian defeats mark antony and cleopatra in 31 ce. 27 bce: octavian declares himself emperor of rome and calls himself augustus. Moves rome from a republic to an empire. Early empire romans still love greek art. They also have a strong tie to etruscan art. Found in the ruins of a villa owned by livia (augustus" wife) called prima porta. He would"ve been holding a ruler"s baton, addressing his troops. This is what augustus wanted people to think he looked like. Cuirass (breast plate) has a ton of reliefs on it. Apollo w/ goddess of dawn, goddess of moon, and the god of the sky. All about how rome controls everything - even the universe.
